Say Goodbye to these Design Trends

10 Home Design Trends That Need to Say Good-bye!

Trends come and go—but some overstay their welcome. Whether you’re building, renovating, or just dreaming up your next home, here are the top 10 design trends people are officially over. According to builderbrigade.com

these are the styles homeowners and design fans say need to be retired... like, yesterday.

I may not agree with all of these design "goodbyes," but here's the list:

1. Gray Everything

Gray walls, gray floors, gray couches—it's all just a little too... gray. Once a neutral go-to, gray has taken over entire homes and people are craving color, warmth, and personality again.

2. Above-Counter Bathroom Sinks

Stylish at first glance, but they’re not practical. These “bowl on a counter” designs are tough to clean around and just don’t age well. The people have spoken: undermount sinks for the win.

3. Bathtub Inside the Shower

Yes, it looks spa-like, but it’s a maintenance nightmare. Most people don’t use the tub enough to justify the mess and cleaning headache. Just give us a great shower, thanks!

4. Barn Doors (Especially on Bathrooms)

They seemed charming until you actually used one. Their lack of privacy and clunky operation make them a no-no for many.

5. Microwave Over the Stove

We get it—space-saving. But the recirculating vent pushes cooking smells back into the kitchen. Plus, there are sleeker, smarter microwave placements now.

6. TVs Over Fireplaces

Neck strain and bad angles galore. If you have to do it, look into a mantel mount to bring it to eye level—or better yet, rethink the layout.

7. Shiplap

It had a moment. A big one. But overuse (especially outside of its farmhouse roots) has many homeowners ready to say goodbye.

8. Vinyl & LVP Flooring

Affordable? Yes. Timeless? Not quite. Some say it can feel cheap, even if it holds up well. Hardwood is making a major comeback.

9. Modern Farmhouse Everything

We all love a Joanna Gaines moment—but the farmhouse look has been everywhere. People are wondering: what’s next?

10. Painted Brick

This one’s divisive. While some still love the look, many argue it ruins natural character, and once it’s painted, there’s no going back.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Sink in the Kitchen Island: Divisive. Great for some, messy for others.

  • 50ft Lots: Too cramped for comfort.

  • 8ft Ceilings: We’re reaching for the sky now.

  • Live, Laugh, Love Decor: You knew it was coming.

  • Foam Sheathing (Cardboard Exterior): Builders, please stop.

  • Open Floor Plans: Surprisingly, not everyone’s a fan anymore.

  • Formal Dining Rooms: Gathering dust most of the year.

  • Subway Tile: Classic, yes—but it's been everywhere for years.

Final Thoughts

Design is personal, but trends can say a lot about where we’ve been—and where we’re headed. Whether you’re remodeling or house hunting, think timeless and functional. The best design choice? One that makes you feel at home.
