Do you have a dream?
If the last few years have taught us anything, it’s the value of home. During this period, many homeowners reimagined what a “dream” home or a “dream” lifestyle really means and are excited to make that dream come true. In fact, 27 percent of homeowners in a recent survey of cited “buying their dream home” as a near-term life goal.
The first step in identifying a “dream” home is to determine how much mortgage you can truly afford because the number may be different than how much you qualify for.
Wait a minute! Is this a trick?
The truth is, a “dream” can quickly lose its allure if you end up “house poor,” with a mortgage payment so high that you are married to the payment with no wiggle room for new furnishings or even a modest vacation. Be sure that your mortgage payment is in line with your financial goals, plans and lifestyle.
Now let’s talk dream home
A grand kitchen remains the number one desire of most homeowners, followed by an outdoor oasis (think pool or sports court) and a decadent primary bedroom ensuite and incredible closet.
So, if you love a good list, by all means write down your “wants” which can ultimately help you focus on your needs--which ultimately define a dream home! Keep in mind that even a “dream” home may need a little attention to make it your own. Stay open minded, visit neighborhoods that interest you and be realistic about costs and time involved in even minor upgrades.
Even if you don’t have kids, it's also a good idea to make sure your home is in a good school district because it can affect the eventual resale price of your home. Be sure to consider the things you can’t change: lot size, distance from parks, highways, and entertainment access.
