Enjoy "The Dog Days of Summer" With Your Pooch

Updated: Jul 29, 2022

I’m sure you’ve heard the term “The Dog Days of Summer.” Perhaps you’ve even envisioned an overheated pup laying under an apple tree with his tongue out, panting in the summer breeze. The expression is a reference to the hot, sultry days that aren’t even fit for a dog. Did you ever pause to think, “What are the dog days of summer?”

The delightful phrase is a reference to Sirius, the Dog Star. During the Dog Days of Summer, the sun actually rests in the same region of the sky as the brightest star visible from any part of the Earth. This star, Sirius, is part of Canis Major, the Greater Dog. During this time, the star is so bright, the ancient Romans believed it gave added heat to the summer sun!

This period, from July 3 to August 11 each year, is known as the Dog Days of Summer.'
